Date: Friday, February 8th. Venue: Angel Orensanz Foundation
New York based Mexican designer Ricardo Seco unveiled his newest collection to a packed venue with special guests like Forbes magazine super mogul Kathy Ireland accompanied by daughter Chloe Olsen. Entitled Resist/Resiste, the fashion assemblage drew inspiration from Tepito in Mexico City. Photographers, painters, graffiti artists worldwide come to marvel at Tepito’s authenticity, home to pro wrestlers and boxers, and courageous matriarchs and trans community. Tepito is the epicenter of productivity, accessible fashion with mass appeal, untouched by private equity firms, a board of directors or blue-chip stock in order to preserve its own identity and reinvest profits back into the community.
Urban silhouettes and sportswear featured a mashup of classical and seasonal materials familiar to Tepito residents. Models emerged down the runway to music by Los Angeles Azules, flaunting Converse All Star sneakers.
Women’s tops displayed gingham print, Tepito/Resist graffiti and lucha libre graphic crop styles and hoodies. Velvet track pants ranged from bumble gum pink to vibrant reds, and multi color lycra leggings and skirts. Long cowl neck sweater dresses projected powerful messages, quote: “Our identity doesn’t allow walls, only dreams, immigrants work and resist.” Two tone and polychromatic rain and varsity jackets detailed varying puffer, cropped, hooded and zip up looks in satin, leather and vinyl textiles.
Men’s dapper athleisure promoted Tepito/Resist/Barrio Brave logo T-shirts, graffiti sweater shirts and hoodies. Flannel button shirts were reinvented in elongated designs with lycra underlay in matching fabric patterns. Juxtaposition pant variation in satin/leather and vinyl/leather combinations. Pops of color emerged in pink tinged zebra print separates, a velvet periwinkle track pant and red underlay peekaboo leather shorts. Men’s leather skort made a brief appearance. Lax styles included black slacks and loose crops pants. All black, animal print, floral and two-tone jackets and parkas paraded fluorescent applique, puffer and pocket detail with sleeveless, hooded and zipper accents, in flowing lengths of satin, transparent, vinyl and leather.
