Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens (PMG) is a three decade long project, a globe-trotting tapestry of awe and wonder on South Street. South Street, once a central hub for political refugees, became home to mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar and his wife Julia. As their neighborhood drew eyes from predatory developers, the Zagars derailed demolition threats by running a successful gallery that led to the building acquisition of what we now call PMG, along with help from community members to secure the purchase of its adjacent lots. The garden’s motif mirrors Isaiah’s world travels to South Asia, South East Asia, Cental & South America, North Africa, and the Middle East, where he met with artists and drew inspiration from their work. Every square inch at Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens is intricately fashioned by hand in a vibrant kaleidoscope of ornaments; the largest of its kind, measuring a whopping 3k square feet of sculptural labyrinth folk art. The exhibit stands as a place to cultivate artistic expression, embrace recreational activities and facilitate mental well being. The recommended length of time to enjoy the premises is minimum thirty minutes.
